Description

Cheesy Jalapeno Popper Puff Pastry Straws are a delightful appetizer combining creamy cheese, spicy jalapeños, and flaky puff pastry. These twists are perfect for parties or a savory snack, offering a perfect balance of heat and creamy texture.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 12 jalapeños, finely chopped (seeds removed for less heat)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon chopped chives or green onions (optional)

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy clean-up.
  2. Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, finely chopped jalapeños (with seeds removed for milder heat), minced garlic, smoked paprika, and salt. Mix until smooth and well blended.
  3. Roll out puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet and gently roll it out slightly to form a rectangle approximately 10×12 inches.
  4. Assemble the straws: Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over one half of the puff pastry. Fold the other half over the filling to cover it and gently press the edges together to seal. Use a rolling pin to lightly flatten and press the layers for better adhesion.
  5. Cut and twist: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the filled pastry into 1/2-inch wide strips. Twist each strip gently and place on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly.
  6. Apply egg wash: In a small bowl, whisk the beaten egg with milk and brush this mixture over each twisted strip to give a glossy, golden finish when baked.
  7. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 15–18 minutes or until the pastry is puffed up and golden brown.
  8. Garnish and serve: Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Optionally sprinkle chopped chives or green onions on top before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • These straws can be prepared ahead and stored in the refrigerator before baking.
  • Leftovers reheat well in the oven for a few minutes to restore their crispiness.
  • For extra heat, keep the jalapeño seeds or add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the filling.
